Let there be colour II

If there's a downside to day of dying its the amount of rinsing that needs to go on before you really get to see exactly what you've created....
As you can see....I showed very little restraint in creating lots of bags of colourful stuff....

Anyway one by one they all make it out of their plastic bags and a procession of Ta-dah! moments follows along...

I pretty much got my desired rainbow of fabric...

After a lot of rinsing...

Plus a few surprises from my more experimental moments...
This little folded triangle isn't a dodgy coloured samosa...

And this little green concertina folded piece....

The jam jar of two shades of yellow top and bottom mixing into each other didn't come out quite as dramatically as I'd imagined it might...

The twisted purple crinkle went a bit too murky for my tastes...

But the jam jar tip it up and back again exceeded my expectations...

And the squish it into a circle-y croissant shape and drip 2 contrasting dyes on it...is my clear favourite of the fabrics...

Now for the bucket of yarn...

I can't believe the yarn has completely sucked up ( absorbed?) all of the dye from the bag so they pretty much plop out of the bag dry like some strange kind of alien spaghetti...

And right about now I'm wondering just how many photos of my sink with some dye running out of yarn I can show you before 'im indoors starts looking for a good psychiatrist? what the heck...here's a full selection...

Don't they all look lovely queuing on the draining board for a final rinse...

But the absolute highlight is the experimental variegated one...where as much as anything I simply tipped he dye that noone else was using onto the yarn... just look how this emerged as the excess rinsed away...

Now it all simply needs to hang on the airer and dry....my fingers are itching to start using it all straight away...I'll have to content myself simply looking at the airer, and trying not to drool!!!!

....whilst wishing it would all dry a little bit faster...

Let there be colour.....

Can a post about colour really start with a line full white laundry?- oh yes! - Just look at that sky!!

There really is a tremendous amount of stuff to get ready for a day of dying fabric.  Its been two years since I last managed to spend a day dying fabric and I really should have re-read all my notes before 6am on the day.  But I didn't so here I am brewing potions at silly o'clock on a Saturday morning....

Oh - and yarn....I'm hoping for a little side production of yarn for a hooky project I've got my eyes on...

Time to take all this white stuff to a super colourful beautiful garden to play with colour all day in inspiring surroundings...

First job: to mix the dyes....

Note the highly sophisticated, technological solution we employed to keeping each dye separate from the other....( knew those jam jars would come in handy)

Let the transformation commence...

Mostly its just a case of scrunching white fabric up and plomping it into a dye bath made of salt water, soda water and dye and massaging the whole lot together in a super strong plastic bag...

But every now and again I get a mad idea about what the fabric might turn out like if I cram it into a jam jar and tip it up and down again..

Capturing blog photos as I go....

For the record I may have had the cleanest hands when we stopped for lunch...

But I didn't have the cleanest work place!!

Thank heavens it was always the intention to have an interesting drop cloth.

Now about that interesting side project of yarn.  Mostly I wanted a rainbow....but I had one hank of yarn left over....so an experimental variegation was called for.  Now you see white yarn...

Now you don't...

I wonder what it will look like when its cooked in its cling film sausage for a few hours....
